How we use SAF at Condor

What is Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)?

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is an umbrella term for all aviation fuels that are produced without the use of fossil fuels like petroleum, which have an up to 80 % lower carbon footprint. For electricity-based power-to-liquid (PtL) fuels, the CO₂ reduction compared to fossil fuel-based kerosene will be even higher in the future (> 90 %). SAFs are blended with conventional fossil kerosene for use in aviation.

And why is it important?

Alternative fuels are the only way to decarbonize aviation with existing technology. Condor will purchase SAF over the next 12 months as part of “Round up for the future” in quantities that exceed the legally prescribed amounts. This amount of SAF will be used on future Condor flights. Moreover, according to the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) can help reduce contrails and climate impacts in air travel.

Because SAF contains fewer aromatic compounds than kerosene, it results in fewer soot particles. This reduces the formation of ice crystals and thus the development of cirrus clouds, which contribute to global warming. Moreover, SAF could positively impact other non-CO₂ emissions like nitrogen oxides and continue to alleviate the pressure on the climate.

How can you support us in using SAF in the future?

Your contribution makes a difference – when refueling on future Condor flights. We specifically use the rounded-up amount from the “Round up for the future” initiative to purchase and use Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The funds are allocated exclusively to SAF fuel. Book now, round up, and together we will make a big difference, little by little!

Overview of Condor's engagement in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)

We are also committed to other initiatives that support the market expansion of SAF and PtL (electricity-based).

Supply agreement with Neste – going beyond regulatory requirements

Neste is market leader in SAF production and delivers the best possible quality and supply capabilities. Condor and Neste have engaged into a multi-year supply agreement ReFuelEU Aviation 2 % SAF mandate as well for a specific voluntary amount beyond the mandate.

Partnership with Caphenia for power-based sustainable fuels

Condor and start-up Caphenia have engaged into a long-term partnership on the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF). In doing so, we are supporting the further development of the process to market-readiness, while ensuring access to firmly agreed purchase quantities once production has reached an industrial scale. (expected to be in 2027).

Caphenia aims to generate a synthesis gas from bio-methane, CO₂, water, and renewable energy to produce environmentally friendly fuels. According to Caphenia, CO₂ emissions can be reduced by up to 92 % compared to the fossil fuel kerosene.

Caphenia's first production facility is currently being built at the Höchst Industrial Park in Frankfurt to demonstrate the industrial scalability of the technology. It is expected to start producing SAF on an industrial scale from 2027, at which point the purchase agreement with Condor will also take effect.

Involvement in the German Government's SAF working group

Since 2024, we have been a member of the “Climate Neutral Aviation Working Group steering committee (AKKL)” and actively take part in the SAF working group. We are also involved in researching and testing the operational avoidance of contrails, as part of the 100-flight trial by AKKL. This experiment offers valuable insights into how climate-impacting contrails are formed and prevented.

Associated partner of the innovation platform InnoFuels

This project is coordinated by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and runs from February 2023 to August 2026. The goal of the InnoFuels platform is to speed up the industrial production of electricity-based fuels (power-to-liquid, or PtL) and advanced biofuels in Germany. This will be achieved by connecting stakeholders from science, industry, politics, and society to leverage synergies and advance the development and application of these fuels.

The project is divided into seven thematic innovation priorities, which encompass all process steps – from raw material procurement through production to the application of fuels. In these areas, research institutions, companies, and political actors collaborate to develop practical solutions. We are also involved in the steering committee for the aviation sector.

Collaboration with INERATEC

The first commercial-scale INERATEC plant is located in Frankfurt, designed to produce up to 2,500 tons of sustainable e-fuels and e-waxes annually. Located in an industrial park, the plant uses renewable hydrogen and biogenic CO₂ to produce synthetic hydrocarbons that are then processed into drop-in fuels, waxes, and chemicals. These products are compatible with existing infrastructure and will meet the legal requirements for sustainable fuels in various industries, including aviation, shipping, and chemicals.

The INERATEC Customer Advisory Board (CAB) is an exclusive, invitation-only forum for leading representatives of airlines, aircraft manufacturers, airports, and policymakers who are shaping the future of more sustainable aviation. Condor has been involved in CAB since spring 2025.

By providing insights into market trends, production requirements, and regulatory challenges, members help INERATEC scale its e-SAF technology to advance industry-wide decarbonization efforts.
