The National Art Gallery
The National Art Gallery is Bulgaria's art museum and contains over 50,000 art works. Established in 1934, the museum was moved to the former royal palace of Bulgaria in 1946. Today the museum is located on Battenberg Square, and is home to works from the Baroque through Modern periods.
Lake Pancharevo is located at the end of the Pancharevo Gorge of the Iskar river. Found between the Vitosha and Lozenska mountains, Lake Pancharevo is a beautiful backdrop for an afternoon or weekend getaway. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral
Located on the eastern side of the city, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is a must-see. The cathedral covers more than 3,000 square meters and can hold over 10,000 people. The cathedral is one of the largest Eastern Orthodox churches in the world, and is conveniently located close to the various other national museums.
National Opera and Ballet
Visit the National Opera and Ballet on your Sofia vacation. In operation since 1890, the opera is one of the oldest Balkan opera companies in operation. The ballet was established in 1928, and with the exception of a brief pause (during the 1944 bombing of Sofia), and has been in operation for almost 90 years.
National Historical Museum
The National Historical Museum is Bulgaria's largest museum, and houses over 650,000 objects in the field of archaeology, history, and fine arts. Opened in 1973, the first major exhibition opened in 1984 for Bulgaria's 1300th Independence day.
