For a good look into Morocco's ancient past, the city of Meknes is a good choice. One of the four imperial cities under the sultan's rule, it features Spanish-Moroccan architecture with tall walls and mighty gates. It's not far from the Roman city of Volubilis, where you can explore the ruins.

Be sure to check out Chefchaouen, a mountain city in the northeastern section of Morocco. The whitewashed houses with arresting blue hues make a dramatic setting against the mountains in the background. This is an excellent place to buy local handicrafts that are not available elsewhere.

While in Morocco, venture out into the Sahara desert and see the Erg Chebbi Dunes. This area of the desert is particularly striking due to the orange colour of the sands. The dunes here can tower over 150 metres high! Camel rides are a popular mode of transportation here.

Be sure to visit Fes and take in the old world splendour of the nearly intact medieval city. Surrounded by high walls, you can step back in time and meander through the bustling streets. No cars are allowed here, so people and goods are transported by donkeys or motorbikes.

No visit to Morocco is complete without a visit to the Djemaa El-Fna, the Marrakesh night market. During the day you'll find snake charmers and other vendors, but as the sun sets and night descends, the crowds grow and you'll find all sorts of food and other offerings for sale.
