Additional airline costs tested: independent travel portal smavel.com has repeated its popular test, evaluating a total of eleven airlines this year (smavel airline test 9/2010). In a comparison of additional costs, the experts were so impressed by Condor's offers and transparent price structure this year that the airline improved its overall rating from 2009 (“good”), instead rating “very good (1.9)” in the smavel airline test 2010.

Condor is the first German airline to equip its long-haul aircraft with state-of-the-art wing extensions. The so-called winglets ensure that the cruising altitude is reached more quickly, and do not require as much thrust during flight and landing, making them extremely ecological as a result. A Boeing 757-300 equipped with winglets can save around 3.5 % fuel annually. The improved aerodynamics also ensures that Condor aircraft fly more quietly, thus reducing noise pollution. Nine of Condor’s 13 B757-300 machines have already been equipped with the winglets. Condor’s B767-300 fleet is also receiving an upgrade. Six aircraft have already been equipped with the new wing extensions, and the remaining three will be upgraded from April 2010 onward in Beijing. The fleet modernization is due for completion in October 2010, saving 5% fuel and reducing environmental pollution in the process.
The B757’s winglets increase the width of the machines by 3 meters to 41,1 meters (9.8 ft to 134.8 ft). They weigh 1.366 kilograms /3,012 lbs at a height of 2,50 meters (8.2 ft). The aircraft span of the recently upgraded B767s has also increased by 3 meters to 50,9 meters (9.8 ft to 167 ft), while the winglets are 3,45 meters (11.3 ft) high and boast an impressive combined weight of 1.500 kilograms /3,307 lbs.
Only four other airlines worldwide currently use these latest generation Boeing winglets.
Condor Flugdienst GmbH, headquartered in Kelsterbach, Germany, was officially recognized among the select group of airlines subscribing to the IATA's (International Air Transport Association) high quality and safety standards through the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA). This lists Condor in the so-called IOSA Registry. By means of this registration, Thomas Cook AG, the renowned leisure airline, assures that Condor meets the more than 900 internationally recognized standards for safety in air travel. Condor’s audit took place last year in Kelsterbach.
The IOSA program was first launched by the IATA in 2003 for evaluating the process management and monitoring systems of an airline in regard to operational safety and quality assurance. IOSA standards were developed in conjunction with interdisciplinary international groups under the direction of the IATA and are recognized worldwide.
Through this recognition, Condor now belongs to the 225 airlines who currently verifiably meet IATA’s operational safety standards. By participating in the IOSA program, Condor demonstrates its commitment to continuous improvement in safety. Follow-up IOSA audits are conducted every two years to ensure that an airline continues to uphold the required standards.
